Ločidlo čertovo lejno (Ferula assa-foetida) je mohutná vytrvalá rostlina z čeledi miříkovité, původem ze Západní Asie, vysoká průměrně 1,5 metru. Rostlina kvete mnoha drobnými, nažloutlými kvítky sestavenými do okolíků. Neobvyklé druhové jméno „čertovo lejno“ získala podle vzhledu pryskyřice (gummi-resina asa foetida), která vytéká z poraněného kořene prosáklého mléčnou tekutinou, a na vzduchu tuhne v hnědou, nepříjemně vyhlížející a silně zapáchající hmotu, která je v tradiční medicíně mnoha asijských zemí využívána jako léčivý prostředek (Iranshahy a Iranshahi, 2011; Golmohammadi, 2022). Rostlina pochází z oblasti na rozhraní Íránu a Afghánistánu, kde roste v nadmořské výšce okolo 1000 m na rozlehlých pláních s písčitou půdou. Odtud byla již v prvém tisíciletí n. l. rozšířena do Indie, Číny a Egypta (Kajimoto et al., 1989).

Gummi-resina asa foetida je přírodní látka na bázi olejové pryskyřice skládající se z mnoha složek. Je tvořena cukry (glukóza, galaktóza, L-arabinóza, rhamnóza a kyselina glukuronová), kyselinou ferulovou a jejími četnými estery, asaresinotannoly a farnesiferoly A, B a C, deriváty kumarinu (např. umbelliferon), kumarin-seskviterpenovými komplexy (např. asakumarin A a asakumarin B). Z dalších zajímavých biologicky aktivních látek byly nalezeny polysulfany (Al-Said et al., 1996), acetyleny (de Pascual Teresa et al., 1986), fenylpropanoidy (Gonzales et al., 1988) a četné seskviterpeny (Dawidar et a., 1979; Abd El-Razek et al., 2001; Asghari et al., 2016).

Rostlina vykazuje antivirotické (Lee et al., 2009; Ghannadi et al., 2014), antibakteriální (Kavoosi a Rowshanm 2013; Samadi et al., 2016; Daneshkazemi et al., 2019) a četné další (antioxidační, anticholinergní, antihistaminové, hypoglykemické, cytostatické, protinádorové) účinky (Zare et al., 2011).
